[DURBAN – 10 May 2010] Parts of the gaming floor of Durban’s Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World are undergoing a complete, multi-million rand makeover to reinvigorate the casino ahead of the bustling 2010 and mid-year holiday crowds.
The facelift is being done in stages during the quieter periods so as not to disrupt patrons.
Upgrades to the smoking section have been completed and work will shortly commence in the non-smoking and privé areas.
Shane Collinson, Suncoast Director of Gaming, said the facelift which was long overdue had been deferred previously because of heavy foot traffic all day and night.
“Up to one million people visit the complex each month and it was difficult to find a long enough quiet period.
“However, we finally decided to just get on with the job to revitalise the casino by working in one section at a time,” he said.
The entire overhaul will be completed by the end of 2011 as the maintenance teams have to work mainly during the quieter times of the year.
All 1680 stools at the 1330 slot machines and tables are being replaced with ergonomic state-of-the-art seats that have been manufactured by a South African company called Gamer. It has attracted a strong following around the world with its high-quality chairs in the casinos of London, Austria and Switzerland.
The bases of 368 upright slot machines are also being replaced. The new bases have concealed lighting in three primary colours that can be combined to create any colour.
“This mood-enhancing lighting is in keeping with the Tsogo Sun Gaming concept of involving all the senses in the gamertainment experience, what we call ‘mind and mood’,” said Collinson.
“The lighting can be specially adjusted and colour-coded on special occasions, such as using red lighting on Valentine’s Day,” he said, adding Montecasino and Suncoast will be the only casinos in South Africa with such lighting.
The carpeting in the casino is also being replaced. The new carpet was custom woven with Suncoast’s trademark art deco theme.
“Suncoast prides itself on its gaming and entertainment offering and is ever conscious of the need to continually improve by affording an aesthetically-refreshed, comfortable and technologically-updated environment.
“Much thought and great effort has gone into ensuring attention to detail and delivering on Suncoast’s brand promise of providing an unsurpassed gaming experience. This ultimately makes the public’s visits more memorable,” said Collinson.
